Kukeri performed traditional New Year's or spring rituals to scare evil spirits away with their furry costumes, decorated wooden animals masks, and large bells attached to their belts.
Lazaruvane, a traditional Bulgarian spring ritual, introduced young maidens – Lazarki - into society. The Lazarki dressed in festive costumes, often bridal clothing made or borrowed from recent brides. The girls visited each house in the village, performing special ritual songs and dances with romantic motifs.
